A renovation “being done” and a room being ready to live in are two different milestones, and the gap between them is wider than most people expect. Contractors haul away debris and do a rough clean on the way out, which is reasonable — detailed cleaning is not their trade and is not priced into a construction estimate.
Why construction dust is a different problem
It is finer than household dust and gets everywhere — inside cabinets that were shut the entire project, on top of door frames nobody looks at, worked into air returns. A normal wipe-down mostly redistributes it rather than removing it, which is why this needs a different technique, not just more time spent on the usual one.
What actually needs doing
- Every surface, including ones that look clean already
- Inside new cabinets and drawers
- Light fixtures and ceiling fans, which collect dust fast
- Windows, sills and tracks
- A full floor wash after dry removal, not just a vacuum pass
When to book it
After the trades are done and debris is hauled out, ideally before furniture goes back in. Same logic as a move-in clean, for the same reason — nothing in the way yet. See our post-construction cleaning page for how we scope a single room versus a full renovation.
If a project is wrapping up soon, get ahead of the schedule with a free estimate rather than waiting until the last coat of paint is dry.
