The Fall Deep Clean: Everything Summer Skipped

Nobody cleans vents in July. September is when a house gets the attention it has been quietly needing since May.

Summer cleaning is maintenance. There are people in the house, sand coming in, and no appetite for pulling apart a room in August. Which means by September most homes have a list of things that have not been touched since spring.

The list

  • Vents, returns and ceiling fans. Four months of dust, right before the heating starts moving air through all of it
  • Baseboards and trim. Where summer floor traffic ends up
  • Inside the oven. Before it becomes the season’s main appliance again
  • Windows, inside. Salt film, pollen and a summer of open-window dust
  • Blinds and sills
  • Under and behind furniture. Especially anything that has not moved since spring
  • Light fixtures. Genuinely changes how a room feels as evenings get darker

Why the timing matters

Two reasons. The heating system is about to circulate whatever is in the vents through every room in the house. And the house is about to be closed up for months, which means anything left in it stays in it.

The one people underestimate

Light fixtures and lamp shades. As the evenings get darker you are relying on artificial light far more, and a summer’s worth of dust on a shade genuinely dims a room. It is a twenty-minute job that changes how the whole house feels in October.

Do it once, properly

This is a deep clean by definition, and it is the one time of year we actively recommend it to clients who are otherwise on standard visits. One reset in September holds the house through to spring.

Do the HVAC first

Change the filter, vacuum the returns, and get the vent covers off and washed rather than just wiped. When the heating comes on it will circulate whatever is sitting in that system through every room in the house for the next six months. Doing it first also means the dust it dislodges lands on surfaces you have not cleaned yet.

Windows, before it is too cold

Interior glass, tracks and sills. Summer leaves salt film, pollen and dust from months of open windows, and once it is properly cold nobody is going to want to do it. Early autumn is the last comfortable window of the year.

Swap the soft goods

Wash and store summer bedding rather than shoving it in a cupboard. Wash throws and blankets before they come back into daily use — they have been folded in a basket since March. This is also the natural moment to wash curtains, which almost nobody does annually.

Entryways, before the wet season

Autumn and winter bring water, salt and grit indoors in a way summer does not. Clean and reset every entry now: washable mats, a place for wet shoes, and somewhere for coats that is not the floor.

One reset holds until spring

This is the deep clean we actively recommend to clients otherwise on standard visits. Done once in September, a house genuinely holds through to March on regular maintenance.
